Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) in Indoor Air

Carbon –Dioxide (CO2) in Indoor Air

Indoor environment human being Exhale Carbon–di-oxide. It cannot be reduced or oxidized.
It is not a toxic or carcinogen but a high level of CO2, causes:

To address Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)  The HVAC – Air ▪ Unit (AHU) system take “Outdoor Air” to dilute Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), Odor and reduce Carbon dioxide (CO2) within acceptable limits.

Conventionally Fresh Air is used to improve:

 Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
▪ Fresh air is not cheap!
▪ Hot and humid air needs to be cooled down to room temperature.

Load profile of fresh air

▪ 60% to cool moisture … wasted energy
▪ 28% to cool nitrogen …..wasted energy
▪ 12% to cool oxygen …..the only useful component in fresh air

How to reduce “Fresh Air” in the process of achieving Indoor Air Quality:

▪ By using controlled injection of ozone.
▪ Oxidation of VOC is performed by ozone and not by oxygen of the fresh air.
▪ Ozone is more powerful oxidizing agent than oxygen.
▪ In the presence of a more powerful oxidant, less powerful oxidant does not have the chance to perform oxidation, until no more of the former is available.
▪ Oxygen of the fresh air is preserved and not spent in performing the task of oxidizing the VOC, which is now transferred to ozone.
▪ Available oxygen is now used entirely to maintain CO2.
▪ Intake of fresh air is reduced drastically. Thus fresh air requirement goes down to 5CFM or less per person.

ASHRAE Standards for Indoor Air Quality

▪ ASHRAE Ventilation code no. 62-1999.
▪ Minimum 15 CFM per person fresh air is required.
▪ Minimum of 30 CFM fresh air is required if smoking is permitted.

Ozone Generator Technology to improve Indoor Air Quality ( IAQ)

▪ Ozone is tri atomic Oxygen.
▪ O3 is a very strong disinfectant & oxidant. Any pathogen or contaminant that can be disinfected altered or removed via an oxidation process, will be affected by ozone.

Ozone Generation:

Ozone is produced when dry (moisture free) oxygen gas stream is subjected to high voltage/high density electrical current within a given area bounded by the electrodes generating the electrical field.

Equipment Specifications of Air Ozonator
1. Ozone generated shall produce minimum of 6-8% wt/wt of oxygen.
2. Feed gas to ozonator will be medical grade oxygen. Air as feed gas is not permissible & shall not be used.
3. Capacity of ozone generator & ozone production shall be specified in gr/hr.
4. Ozone generator shall be sized as per dose of 1.0 ppm of ozone.
5. Ozone generator shall generate medical grade ozone, free from any impurities & by products.
6. NOx or Nitric acid will not be generated, by ozone generator.
7. Each ozone generator shall operate automatically using sensors & interlocked by ozone sensor.
8. Residual ozone going into occupied room will not be more than 0.4 ppm.
9. Ozone gas shall be injected in return air duct only.
10. Ozone generator shall be able to inject ozone gas in mainstream or side stream.
11. Ozonator or any of its part will not hamper the flow of the air, by creating obstruction in a way.
12. Ozone generation & variation of ozone output shall be at variable frequency. Modulation of ozone at constant frequency is not permissible.
13. Ozone generator equipment shall be housed outside the AHU duct. The ozone generator shall be floor/skid mounted with integrally piped & wired.
14. Ozone generator cell shall be fabricated of High purity aluminium.
• Cylinder : Will be Teflon coated for long life
• Gasket : Will be made from ozone compatible material.
• Dielectric: Tubes shall be fabricated of ceramic or high purity quartz to provide high voltage & high efficiency dielectric.
15. All pipes & accessories in contact with ozone shall be ozone compatible.
16. All electrical components shall confirm to CSA, NEC and UL ratings. The generator shall be suitable for operation on 380V- 410V Hz.
17. Ozone power density shall not exceed 0.30 watts per sq. cm of effective dielectric surface area.
18. Power supply unit transformers shall be dry type, class F insulated with high temperature cut-out for each phase, suitable for operation in 104degree F (40 degree C) ambient, with temperature rise not higher than 122 degree F (50degree C).
19. The PSU shall consist of the following components as a minimum, all factory wired, assembled and tested.
20. 3 Phase harmonic filter to minimize total harmonic distortion.
21. Three phase isolating transformer.
22. Three phase fully controlled rectifier with snubbers and MOV’s (Metal Oxide Varistors) on each side.
23. DC filter bank.
24. IGBT inverter assembly complete with snubbers.
25. Medium frequency oscillating circuit with over current and over voltage protection.
26. Medium frequency dry-type transformer.
27. If operation is on medium frequency, each power supply unit shall have frequency electronic protection consisting rectifiers or invertors over current protection, over current protection, over voltage protection at the IGBT modules, and high voltage short circuit protection.
28. The Ozone generator shall be provided with emergency stop button.
29. Energy saving intake of fresh air from outside for dilution should be reduced (by about 50 - 80 %).
